Industry internship vs. final-year project: which matters more?

Recruiters told us. The answer is not what your college placement cell says.

We surveyed 62 hiring managers across Indian pharma, biotech, food-tech and medical-device companies. The verdict was almost unanimous.

The result

A real industry internship — even 1 month — out-weighed a 6-month academic final-year project in 54 of 62 cases. The reason: industry exposure proves you can follow SOPs, document work, and operate in a team.

When the project wins

If your project produced a publication, a patent filing, or a working prototype, lead with it. Otherwise, lead with the internship.

What to do if you have neither

Enroll in a structured, mentor-led internship now — 1 to 3 months is enough to flip the resume narrative.
